Is radon testing required in Alberta?

Do Alberta homebuyers have to complete a radon test before purchasing? Generally, no. As of 2026, radon testing is not normally a mandatory part of a standard home inspection or ordinary residential real estate transaction in Alberta.

However, “not legally required” does not mean “unnecessary.” You can:

  • Add radon testing as a condition of your offer
  • Request available testing records from the seller
  • Test after possession if timing does not allow a long-term test
  • Retest after renovations or significant foundation work
  • Test older and newer homes alike
